Powerful secrets

Secrets revealed during the story are judged by amount of energy it takes for them to be revealed. If a secret is revealed too easily, it has no energy. But if the revealing rips off the character’s mask, then we know that nothing will ever be the same.

Apply this principle to exposition. Instead of having Grandma volunteer information about her impending hip replacement operation, let her make a secret about it.
