Every object in your story has the capacity to stand for something other than what is apparent. Maybe it is running water or light or darkness or rain or food or clothes. What metaphors or symbols could these represent in your story?
It is the ability to summarise and encapsulate that makes symbolism so interesting, useful and – when used well – arresting.
